“God, what are You saying? I want to hear you!”

It’s a new year; a time to reset, refocus, and cast vision. As the prior year ends and the new year approaches I always go to the Lord and ask Him to help me reevaluate what I am doing in this time, and I ask Him to speak and help me prioritize what He wants me to do. We all need vision and direction. So of course, we say, “God, help! What are You saying?” And we wait…..but the question is do we know how to hear Him?

We are in a time where I believe people have become dependent on the prophetic word of the Lord from another source rather than directly from the mouth of God in their own prayer time. Many have forsaken the secret place therefore they do not know or hear the voice of God for themselves. But what may be more disturbing is that they would rather have a quick fix of a word than to spend time truly knowing the God that created them and longs to have a relationship with them. They are doing themselves a disservice and missing out on the most amazing gift – a relationship with the Living God.

The more I walk with the Lord and serve Him in ministry it baffles me as to how many people who call themselves Christians do not know how to hear the voice of their God. There are so many ways God can speak to us. He has made each of us unique with different gifts and personalities which means he speaks to us individually depending on how He created us.

We can always be sure to find His voice in a moment of need. He promises that He will answer us when we call to Him. It may not always be what we want to hear but as a loving Heavenly Father He promises to answer us. I’m going to give you a few examples of how God speaks to us.

‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things,

which you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3

He has one voice but speaks in many ways.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 Amp. “All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

John 14:26 NKJV “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

John 16:13 NKJV However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Jeremiah 1:11 NASB And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

Joel 2:28 NKJV “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.

Genesis 28:12 NKJV And he (Jacob) had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold (to look), the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

Psalm 19:1 Amp. “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And the expanse [of heaven] is declaring the work of His hands.”

This part of Him speaking will primarily be demonstrated to us through another human being but is not limited to that as we can experience Him in and through the Holy Spirit in tangible ways by waves of love, peace, joy, kindness, etc. as we are in His presence and glory.

Just to name a few supported by scripture.

Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

John 3:16 NKJV “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

John 14:27 NKJV “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

This is not an exhaustive list of the ways God speaks but as we can see He is multifaceted in His communication to us! He wants to cultivate a relationship with you, share His secrets with you and have daily fellowship. Holy Spirit is here and waiting.  I encourage you to meditate on the ways God communicates and ask Holy Spirit to help you be aware of how He speaks to you. Ask Him to show you how He made you to hear Him. I am confident if that He is true to His word as stated in Jeremiah 33:3; If we open our hearts and call upon Him then He will answer us. He is waiting for you to talk to him, and He desires to speak to you in the unique way that the Father created you.

An exciting journey of discovering His voice for yourself awaits.
